Most local ornithologists clubs have licences for netting wild birds for ringing. I imagine the reason would be to record the movements of birds in the wild.
You have to have a BTO license to ring birds in this country. If you want more info look at the BTOs website.

If you got any info from the rings, eg colour or letters. There is a page you can record your sightings on their website. Or you could email them to the county recorder.
