Thread: Which lens?

  1. #1

    Default Which lens?

I want to upgrade my 'everyday' lens - at the moment I'm using an 18-55 Canon EF-S kit lens and much as I adore my 100-400mm L lens, it's impractical to carry about with me everywhere.

I've narrowed it down to EF 17-40mm f4.0L or EF 24-70mm f2.8L, but that's where I get stuck. The 17-40mm is about £350 cheaper than the 24-70mm, but given that I primarily like to shoot wildlife, I'm thinking it might be worth paying the extra for that extra bit of reach and speed (I'll probably be buying second hand anyway).

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Have a look at the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. One of my favs and way cheaper than the Canon equivalent. Highly recommended.

When I was using a Canon FF camera I found the 24mm to 105mm to be a perfect "everyday lens".On a Nikon I now use a 24 to 70mm on a FF Camera, but with a crop frame sensor Camera I would miss the wide end.
Your problem is that the 100 to 400 is perfect for wildlife, 100 or shorter will be too short, so I would suggest two options.

    1) If you want to do some wildlife with your everyday lens look at an 18 to 200 with IS.

    2) If you want a higher quality shorter lens I would suggest the Canon 17 to 55 F2.8 IS, this will give you a bit more reach than the 17 to 40.

    Have fun choosing.

Sigma do a very nice 18 to 200 zoom canon fit. Its light and compact, and I find it covers just about every situation, so reduces trhe need to carry more than one lens, and saves time and hassle in messing about changing lenses
