Why is Derv called Derv.....

someone asked me the other day and I couldn't say - I always call Diesel Derv....

Was it anything to do with before red and white diesel were differentiated for tax purposes?

Like was Derv for commercial / agri vehciles and deisel for motor cars or was it just an old fashioned term....

I could google it but i'd love for someone to tell me...
