Is there a reason why the first 99% of a download can take just 1% of the total time of the download and that last bit takes aaaaaggggeesss?

If its torrent type files then I believe this something to do with the thumbs.db file include in the download which can mess things up or it could be to allow "re-seeding" of the torrent.

if it does it on all downloads ie not just torrents. then i'd be inclined to run something like ATFcleaner [standalone cleaner - no install neccessary][
or for a more thorough job - Glary Utils or CCleaner [both require installing.]

typically the 99% bit is where the file location and saving starts on your hdd, and i might just be a bit full or full of old files to do it quickly.

defragging the destination drive can help especially if its torrents (or other p2p or even just big files) which tend to get really fragmanted on your drive. Smooths out the final copy from temporary file to destination file as it may be reading one fragmented file and writing it to another fragmented location.

If it's a big file the last 1% usually includes copying the file to where you want it saved.

If you download it in IE, no matter what you ask it to save the file, it downloads it to your Temporary Internet Files / Downloads folder. Then when it's finished it copies it to where you asked it to save it. If it's a big file, the copy can take a while.

I have also noticed this with Download Accelerator (and a few other download apps). Pausing the download and then resuming it usually finishes it pretty quickly. It's probably something to do with the download session needing to be terminated but the other side is slow to respond.

must concur with this too.

also had issues with the apps that resume a download if you decide to suspend it or turn off and return sometime later to complete it.

really screws the FAT table badly and creates a massive amount of fragmented .tmp files.

on the front of defragging, there are much better free or freeware defraggers than the ms one. these will deal with system files too. or use the windows one and delete hibfil.sys and pagefile.sys first then run it.
