    Default Thread shutting, etc

I hate this fashion where you start a thread and if you disagree with any opinion expressed in it you shut it.
In fact there are many things that I am disliking about this board that were not as evident or absent before:
    1. pettiness
    2. belittling instead of robust discussion
    3. inability to discuss anything controversial without it denigrating into a school yard scrap
    4. personal attacks

It is an opinion board, and as long as the opinion does not defend illegality, is not offensive to swathes of people and is expressed in a formed and thought through manner, express it by all means, and allow me to disagree robustly with you when I do. I won't get into a huff and tell my mum, and I expect the same of you!
An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing

Calm down now, go into a darkened room, deep breaths, it works for me.

Well said Ju, this board has become quite stomach turning recently and it is a real shame as I am sure it is not a true representation of the people of Caithness.
It seems that those that shout loudest and longest are taking over and turning a nice place into a war zone.

I agree too with most of what has been said, sad thing is that people are leaving, not posting and becoming disengaged from what is a generally a good forem.
These people are the very ones that should be staying as unfortunately this leaves it open to those who would seek to lower it into a morass.

That is a very good point Lizz but I suppose people just get fed up holding their tongues.

The trouble is that certain people take being corrected or being presented with a difference of opinion (which makes more sense) as a personal attack. Their pride gets in the way of acknowledging what's right and what's wrong.

For example, a woman at work took it upon herself to express her opinion to me about, yes you've guessed it, wind farms. She knew nothing about the subject except her personal opinion about their aesthetics (which is about the only thing that is worth arguing over) yet she went on about certain technical issues which were bogus. I corrected her on every point yet she took it personally since she is supposed to be the high and mighty mechanical engineer and I'm just a pleb and she has refused to speak to me ever since after taking the cream puff. No big deal really to me but it demonstrates that there's nowt funnier than fowk!
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

I have not been on here recently because of what you said Ju. Just find it can be quite petty sometimes.

I know that i take things too harshly but i dont like when people try and judge me on a message board! Anyway...i float in the backround!!
    I SWORE ON ONE THREAD!
    GET OVER IT!!!!!

Just had a thought and was wondering why a thread can't be edited rather than closed as has been done a couple of times lately when they have gone off track.
I'm not sure how much extra work this involves for the moderators and would n't wish them too much more as they give up enough personal time as it is.
I think it still remains the perogative of an individual poster who starts a thread to have the right to close or remove it provided they have sufficient grounds, no doubt some one will correct me if I am wrong on the matter.

I don't mind a bit of verbal fisticuffs, providing there's good reason. I don't think any worse of anyone because I disagree with them over something, but I get hacked off with the terminally 'offended' who take their bat home at every opportunity.

Life's far too short to be worrying about if I've 'offended' some delicate creature who can't hack an opinion that does not match their own.

In addition to the Rules and Terms shown, maybe there should also be a section containing users suggestions to new users, eg:
    - try to respond to thread topic with arguments and facts
    - try not to attack thread originator, posters or others ie: off topic

I could have used some such advice one night when I got hot under the collar.

Members of Caithness.org in being petty shocker....the mods are the worst!

When you realise who you are actually posting with you'll realise it's not worth your time or effort. Caithness.org used to be alright, now it's crap at best, most due to the nonsense you mentioned.

An updated Forum Rules is close to being finalised and these type of comments have been taken on board and are incorporated within them.

Your opinion of course, but thankfully we mods have thick hides! As has been discussed many times before we are damned if we do and damned if we don't - users just have to remember that without mods this forum would have had to shut down years ago. When the Org went down for a few days the consensus on its return was that the vast majority of users are happier having a service than none at all.

Ah but Northerner - you tend to talk sense. You can put a good argument up for you difference of opininion in an articulate, non-argumentative way.

Some people load their answers to be highly inflammatory - they're actually quite clever in how they do it. Other amaze me when they start threads on inflammatory topics and then get upset when they get a backlash. If you start a discussion on an open forum then you will get answers that agree with you and others that don't...
