Radio Scanner

Can anyone tell me what sort of scanner ( make, model, frequency range etc) I need to be able to receive coast guard, aviation and various "other channels" please? I have in the past bought two scanners, one like a brick which seems to receive only aircraft flying out of Wick, the other is useless altogether!

I used to enjoy the scanner, but the police have moved more to mobile phones and were planning (not sure if they have yet) moving to secure digital channels make it less fun.
