Called "Early" because in the southern part of its range this moth starts to appear in February, but in Caithness the first ones are not found until late April or May. It is on the wing now and I have found three at one site this week. The butterfly-like pose when it is at rest is characteristic and distinguishes it from other species of Thorn moths.
