Dinner party ideas?

A few of my friends and I are doing a come dine with me thingy, which, so far has been great. Now its my turn and am not sure what to cook.

I am thinking two courses and something that won't cost the earth.

Any advice for a fairly novice cook would be very much appreciated.

Eight is lot of heads for a novice cook, why don't you do a buffet, something to suit everyone, that way, it is informal, relaxing and enjoyable for you too.
