I think its facinating that you can see so many different types of stone in close proximity to each other but from very different era.
A man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears.
Stones can migrate around the coast, but some unusual types were possibly carried to Caithness as ballast in sailing ships coming here from all over to pick up grain or flagstone paving.
Its erosion from the ever-so-slightly acidic rain reacting with the limestone. You can see some similar erosion around Caithness where the flagstones are limey (eg Strathy).
