Windows updates

Am posting this because presumably others have had the latest batch of Windows XP automatic updates. My CounterSpy was suspicious of one and recommended quarantine, which I did but now don't know what to do or whether it's safe to download. It's this one -

Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB953839)

which wanted to change the Registry. It's sitting in the corner now wanting me to finish downloading. I did Google it and didn't understand one link but found someone else not liking some of this lot listed here

Wouldn't it be nice if we could trust MS ?

my system updated the other night 15th,there was ten updates.just checked one of them is same as one you mention-not had any probs.my os is vista though could it be it's not compatable with xp.not sure about it myself,i usually check what it wants to update and only take important ones,the rest unless it is something to do with software on my system already,like phone and printer etc,get left out.

Hi badger,

You'll be fine installing this update. It disables loading or installing of some ActiveX controls at the request of the providers (not MS in this case) for the reasons explained in the page below.

Thanks Paul. It was only CounterSpy warning me that got me worried. I'll download it so, fingers crossed.
