The first day back at school

Its quarter to nine and the bell has rung
bags into lockers are unceremoniously slung
The teachers cringe, the students are back
For the next few hours they must take the slack

An hour goes past the bell rings again
The teachers get new students for more of the same.
Only one more hour and all can have a break
Why does the clock move so slow, for goodness sake?

The bell rings once more
the coffee cups clatter
the students and teachers
in groups at once chatter.

The break now over,
the teachers are shattered,
the students minds
with information are battered

Another period over
just one more then its lunch.
The students relieved
that in their peer group
they can bunch.

Its lunchtime, the students desecend
on a town which has been quiet since the weekend.
The mess, the debris, the chipshop wrappers
It looks like the town has been left in tatters.

They head back to school
unaware of their mess
The town cleaners
shaking their fists and their heads.

Another two hours and its all over
the first day back the kids are in clover.
The teachers nerves are once more in shreads
but at least there are few hours to spend in their beds.

Now its the turn of the local bus drivers
they sit in their seat waiting for the arrival
of dozens of students all excited their free
discussing whats been happening that first day

The teacher comes on the bus
to check all the seat belts are secured
He walks up and down checkng
It all seems in order, has he been fooled?

His feet have barely touched the ground
as he exits the vehicle
seconds later "hes gone" all
seat belts unbuckled.

Students are on their way home to thier villages and towns
The school day is now over,
The kids yet again are in clover
theres only a few hours before the smiles become frowns.

A wee one who starts in Primary 1
his life will change
whatever the time
He leaves his mother
and is scared of the time

Its now Playtime
oh please just end
who are these people
Around all the time

Its now Lunchtime
I do not have to go back
I can go go home
and unpack my sack

But come 9am
its back to the grind
Suddenly
Im not scared anymore
