    Default eml files

    Have received an email with .eml files attached but I cannot open them. Using Windows XP and Outlook Express.
    Could someone please help?
    Thanks in advance.

    How are trying to open them? What happens when you try to open them?

    Eml files are e-mails which, if attached to another e-mail, should be openable by double clicking on them. If nothing happens when you double click them then it's possible that the extension (.eml) has been disassociated - do they have a little envelope icon next to the eml files?

    Pop up message appears, the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.

    What to do is save the file somewhere (let's say the desktop) and then open the file from wherever you've saved it to. You will get a message saying that 'Windows cannot open the file' - from this message, select 'Select the program from a list' and then select Outlook Express from the list and make sure 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is ticked. Select OK.

    That should fix it so that when you try and open the file from within Outlook Express it will open it within Outlook Express.

    Once you've done that you can delete the .eml file you saved to the desktop.

    Have done this, but when it opens in OE all that happens is that Outlook Express opens to my in box, but message does not open at all.

    When you saved the file to the desktop how big was it? What you opened it (and you got Outlook Express just going to your inbox) did you open it from the desktop or as an attachment? Try both and see if it's different.

    When you saved the .eml file to the desktop, try opening it with Notepad and see it's contents. Here is a quick .eml file I created earlier - your will obviously be different but it will have a similar format:

    To: "paul"
    Subject: uytds
    Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2008 23:19:40 +0100
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
    boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0006_01C8CCE2.CDE9DCB0"
    X-Priority: 3
    X-MSMail-Priority: Normal
    X-Unsent: 1
    X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.3790.3959

    This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

    Opened it from desk top when it went straight to inbox, it won't open at all when I try to open the attachment.

    When you say it won't open at all, do you mean when you try and open it from within Outlook Express (ie. but double-clicking on the attachment)?

    Can you save it to the desktop again and find out how big it is and, if you can (depending on what you meant above) try and open it in Notepad (run Notepad and then go to File->Open and go to where you saved the .eml file and open it)?

    I was trying to copy and paste the file to post on here but there are over 250,000 characters.

    It won't open when I double click on the attachment

    I tried the above, but when I go to desk top for the saved file there is nothing there.

    Forgive me for asking this daft question (but if I don't ask ...), but you did save it to the desktop (you can save the attachment by right-clicking and select Save - this is how it works in Outlook so I'm making a massive leap that it's the same in OE)? If you saved it, it should be there (I'm assuming if you can see it has 250,000 characters you must be able to open it somehow).

    You don't need to post anything other than the first 20 or so lines which you can PM me with if you don't want to post it in public.

    If it's not on the desktop how did you open it and know that there are over 250,000 characters in it?

    Because I tried to copy and paste it onto message board and it was too big a file to post.
