i got the shock of my life when i opend my browser this morning, my home page is google, an the screan was black, i thought my laptop was broken

Google users in the United Kingdom will notice today that we "turned the lights out" on the Google.co.uk homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display. However, you can do something to reduce the energy consumption of your home PC by joining the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.
Given our company's commitment to environmental awareness and energy efficiency, we strongly support the Earth Hour campaign, and have darkened our homepage today to help spread awareness of what we hope will be a highly successful global event.
How green can you be? The UK's carbon footprint is over 500 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Individuals account for 45% of this. Calculate your carbon footprint and find out how you can reduce it by turning off unused lights and other carbon-reducing actions.
Why did Google choose this specific organization?
We believe in doing our part to help combat climate change, and found the Earth Hour initiative to be a timely, important event. Further, we think the "lights out" idea's individual-centered nature is something that millions of people worldwide can participate in. In short, we really like it. So we did something about it.

I dont usualy pay much attention to much global warming stuff, i do turn everything off on a night time but thats mainly due to saving electric, but i think its quite a cool idea, probably won't be participating though as i will most likely be working or sleeping before work. but i think its quite good that google are showing thier suport and its informing more people about it.

Google are supporting something called Earth Hour. When I first went to the Google homepage I got a bit of a shock and I thought it was my machine that was playing tricks.

Threads merged...

Threads merged...

Why? I don't understand why threads have to be merged. It was done on windmill issues recently. It doesn't get done to shopping threads, what makes the difference? Sorry if I sound a bit tetchy. The org and mods do a great job but this annoys me. And Im really referring to the windmill merging. This is a bit of suppressed bad temper.

Where similar subject matter / thread direction is identified, it is common practice to merge them. Saying that there have been times when, due to the timings of the various posts, it has ended up being a bit messy but, in general, the merge works well.

There are numerous situations where, if a thread title had been altered, it would have been more obvious to others not to start a new thread on the same subject matter. For instance, in this case, had YFN's thread on Earth Hour included the word Google somewhere in the title, then Brokencross would have probably spotted it and realised there was already a relevant thread. This is in no way a slight on either YFN or Brokencross but it would make the merging of threads less frequent.

Likewise there were recently numerous threads on Firewalking which were merged as they were related, as with the Lybster Lightbeams ones - in all these cases the titles have been altered to help identify the relevant threads.

Why are some threads not merged? Well it really depends on the subject matter. Some might say the proliferation of Asda / Tesco / Fuel threads are all inter-related but many are too specific to be merged. It's really down to how where the thread is, or appears to be, heading.

As to why? Simple - it helps keep the forums neat and tidy.

I just came across Earth hour via a different route, came onto the forum to post and - there it already is! Seem to remember Bill mentioning it last year. looks like i may be able to join you in the chatroom, if i dont fall asleep, have spent the day in orkney just got home, found out im not at work till half 7 in the mornin so i reckon i can watch casualty then go to bed, so may be able to pop in for 10 or so minutes
