Thread: Frogspawn

    Default Frogspawn

Found frogspawn on Dunnet Head today. Earlier than usual despite the poor weather.
Has anyone else seen frogspawn this year?

Out walking today on a forest track thats not used much now and came across soom in a "pond".
Walking back we actually found some lying at the side of the track. Was very brave and picked it up and placed it back in the pond.Really suprised how heavy it was.

I saw some yesterday, strangely it was out of the water too. I presumed kids had done it but it was in a very isolated spot. weird!

I wonder if with all this weird weather the frogs are a little confused.
Oh thought the frog spawn had previously been in a hollow that had dried out
I dont think so,maybe an expert will help us out Jean.

I saw some frogspawn in a trackside pond in Broupster forest on Sunday. Also some more at the edge of the track, maybe it could not wait?

Default It is a calculated risk, but...........

Frogs often spawn in puddles on (rutted) tracks.
These puddles tend to be free of predators. However if food is short, the tadpoles will turn cannibal.
If the weather is favourable (ie wet) the tadpoles stand a good chance of becoming froglets.

My garden pond is a hive of activity just now - dozens of frogs all singing away - sometimes it is really noisy out in the garden!!

I haven’t been to look to see how much spawn there is yet; I don’t like to disturb them.

    I just love frogs.

    Default Duck food

Ducks and other birds pull it out - I would guess Otters, maybe even foxes eat it too.
