    Smile James Bain Carpenter

Been looking for when my gfather came to Aus Know he was here in oct 1915 as that's when dad was born so must have been in abt jan 1915. Can find nothing in the records here. He and his bro were carpenters so they must have trained somewhere. Wondering would there have been indenture records and/or where would they have done their apprentiships around Keiss or Wick or Caithness or even Scotland. He was a fine carpenter if the furniture he made my grandmother in any indication and later ran a building co in Sydney building large houses around the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. Almost all papers and records have been destroyed at some time and I have had to rely on info from a relative i contacted on genes reunited and here. That's been wonderful. But i'm hopeing there is other records i haven't thought to try yet.
    Thanks
    Regards robyn

    Default Carpenters

The best known Cabinet Makers in Wick was the company of McEwen from 1828 - 1986. Furniture makers, Boat Buildings etc etc . Their standards were exceptionally high.
They have a most illustrious history.
Anyone who had trained there would have been sure of work anywhere in the world.
The Archives in Wick Library would have something on them.

    Good luck

Have you tried the National Archives UK - Ancestors Abroad - great site.

I hope I am not telling what you may know but even if the ship docked in one city it may have gone on to another port. My mum arrived Perth and that is where her records are but she came on to Melbourne in the same ship.

    Good Luck, Lynn
