Thread: Wireless BT HomeHub Issue

  1. #1

    Default Wireless BT HomeHub Issue

I have a BT HomeHub and up untill now I have had no problems with it at all. Today though I was sitting on the internet this morning, went for breakfast, came back and it had stopped working.

WIndows tells me that it is connected to the router, but no matter how hard I try I cannot get it to connect to the internet. It wont even let me access the BT HomeHub control panel.

There is no firewall on it except the windows one and that is currently switched off. I have reinstalled the wireless adapter, and tried changing the drivers but that didnt work either. I have two other wireless devices on the network and these both connect fine.

I just can't figure out the problem.

    PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!

I was just playing about and I think I know what the problem is.

I was looking at the network on the homehub and I noticed that the computer was greyed out (name changed):

    Attachment 1259

Then I looked at the actual device and it gave the status as inactive:

    Attachment 1260

The other devices that work have their status as Active.

So now the question is, how do I change the status?

Sorry to ask the obvious but have you turned off the power to the router, waited a minute or two then repowered it? This can often resolve such problems.

Hi, It is notthe WAN ip address that he is asking about but the IP address that the home hub has assigned to the wireless conx.
IP address of your hub is 192.168.1.254, All BT home hubs have this default Ip address. Your PC, it conx'ed right will have An IP address, 192.168.1.XXX

Home hubs IP address range starts with 64
so if you are getting an IP address 192.168.1.64 or higher then you are assigned an IP address fro the hub and that means the wireless, USB, CAT5 conx is fine.
If you are getting a 169.254 Ip address then you WEP key is entered in wrong or poss AV/Firewall blocking the conx, but I beleave that you said it was disabled,

you can check your IP address on Win 2000, win XP, or Vista by going to start > run > (Start search on Vista) and type in " cmd " and press OK, return, or enter

this will open a black DOS box.
In here type " ipconfig " and press enter or return

If you can do this and let me know the IP address or IPV4 address for the wireless an I can tell you what you need to do from there.

if you wish you can PM me the details.

OH & Mr P Cannop, what the hell is living in Wick or Thurso got to do with anything unless you are walking the streets with a tinfoil hat of messing with peoples WI-Fi access, STOP trying to put you number of posts up

OPen DOS as I said in my 1st post.

type in ping 192.168.1.254 and press return

please insure there is a space after the word ping
this will send 4 packets to the ip address of the router and if you get 4 replys, o% loss then there is info passing from the PC to the hub.

OKay, so you said that you have a valid IP address and it is in the 192.168.1.64 upwards range and if you are not getting packets returning to you then you have assigned the IP address yourself or something is blocking the wireless conx,

dose the same computer work on a cable conx to the hub or are you using a diff one just now to post on the or, and what Windows OS are you running. I will tell you how to check the IP address if its on Auto or if you have manualy assigned it.

    Operating System: Windows XP
    Internal Ip Address: 192.168.1.66
    Default gateway: 192.168.1.254

IP address and DNS address is obtained automatically.

I can connect to the internet through two other computers and a PS3. Right now I am using the computer which wont connect by having an ethernet cable connected to my laptop which then uses a wireless link.

I cannot connect this computer directly to the homehub using a cable as it is too far away.

Thats great, I dont have totell you how to check,

Other devices are working on wireless and cable if I have picked you up right, so the issue is not with the hub,

the issue has to be with the wireless adapter on the computer asthe same computer is working on ethernet or something is blocking the wireless conx.

So what could be blocking it?

Could be a Virus or if you fo have an AV, or rirewall on the computer and is out of date it could be blocking the wireless conx to keep you safe, stay conx'ed on ethernet and go to http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeuse...ns/activescan/ and get Panda to scan your PC, it is free and will tell you if there is anythin on your PC that shouldn't be, Also, if there is an old AV/firewall, bin it or get it upto date and turn windows firewall back on if you havn't already.

See what your outcome is after that.

Belkin would be a better better bet as USB and can be moved easy to a 2nd PC/Laptop if needed, some Belkin adapters dont work on ASCII and only work in HEX. It is to do with the type of WEP you are running on the router, the home hub is running Hex and that is good for you cause it will work out of the box with no change needed to the wireless set up of the hub, but if you get a new router then you may have to mess with the wireless setting on the new router to get it on HEX to get the 2 to talk
