The new 40GB models are not going to have backwards compatibility with the PS2 full stop.
the backwards compatability aka sympathy chip was taken out of the machines before uk release and instead releid on firmware updates which works fine. The big fuss at the moment is that the other countries are to have no sympathy chip in new machines and now they are also still to learn about firmware updates.everyone of my ps2 games work apart from manhunt which they will not try to get to work as its banned.

Im prity sure the latest ps3 with the lower sized hardrive cant play playstaion 2 games but can play playstion 1 thats why its cheaper because of the smaller hard drive and the ps2chip isnt in it. I think its awful why they dont make these games machine fully compitable
Are you sure about that? I am 99.9% positive that the new ones to be realeased once the 60GB models are out of stock will not be able to play PS2 games. They will be able to play PS1 games though. They don't have any PS2 hardware or software.

Positive about it mate.
They dont have the Emotion Engine PS2 chip but they can play PS2 games thru Firmware updates and Emulation software.
ALL the European machines since launch did not have the Emotion Engine chip as they were trying to make the console cheaper but it still works thru emulation.
I can play the games on mine and it doesn't have the "Emotion Engine" PS2 chip.
I can also play PS1 games on my pc without having any sort of chip from the PS1, its all done through EMULATION.
Go to www.emulator-zone.com and have a read up on emulation.

All stating that there is no backwards compatibility. And on sony's own site it states:

Yeah you are right mate, it won't play PS2 games, bad move by sony in my opinion!
Its only £50 cheaper than the 60gb one now and they removed the Backwards Compatibility, the card readers and 2 USB slots, not to mention you get 2 games and an extra pad with the 60gb version.
Weird move i say.
Read a feature in GamesMaster last night.
well seeing as i put my playstation games into my dvd drive on my pc im quite sure i own them lol.
