The Dept of Employment and Pensions claimed a Caithness farmer was not paying his workers proper wages and sent an official to investigate.
The official said. 'I need to know what you pay your staff.'
The farmer replied. 'Well, there's the farm hand and he gets £200 a week plus free room and board and then there's the cook/housekeeper and she gets £150 a week plus free room and board.'
The official said. 'That sounds fair to me....'
'Ah.' the farmer cut in. 'But there's the half-wit an' he works 18 hours a day and does about 90% of the work here and only gets a tenner a week.
I buy him a bottle of whisky on a Saturday and he occasionally sleeps wi' ma wife.....Oh and he pays for his room and board.'
'That's the man I need to speak to.' says the official.
'Ah well,' says the farmer, 'That'll be me.'

Oh how true to life eh? them who work sometimes get paid so much more than the grafters.......I am married to a farmer so know the rate....my one doesn't get the whisky bit tho!
