Good healthy pup starting to moult it's white coat.
They don't eat much at that stage and will spend days just laying,
hopeful for a bit of peace and quiet
I love that smile they have when laying on their side, makes them look so content with life.
    good pic.

This seal was last seen at Sarclet, Thrumpster.
The Caithness Marine Mammel Medics would like to catch up with it to remove the net attached to the seals neck.
Seals cover long distances so it could come ashore almost any where on the East coast of Caithness.
If you do see it please call one of the numbers listed.

Please call BDMLR on 01825 765546 OR SPCA 0870 5555999

Default Pup about to leave the beach.

This pup as just finished it's moult and will be soon be learning to live in the sea.
A very large precentage will not survive until next Spring.
The number that die can vary from 30-60% depending on the area where they are born.

    Default Last of the few.

The grey pup season is slowly drawing to an end with just a few pups left dotted around the coast.
At this time in their development they are quite sleepy and dont register when anything approaches.
I stood within 2 feet of the white coated seal and he/she was so fast asleep he/she didn't notice.
I moved 4 or 5 yards away so i would not pose a threat, and made sufficient noise to wake him/she.
Not for the sake of a pic but so i could see the seals eyes and assess the seal health.
The first pic was taken on the 15th Dec 2007 the day the pup was born.
The second pic i took this morning 12th Jan 2008.
The pup will lose the white coat over the next week and will probably go to sea a week or two later.

The Caithness Marine Mammal Medics have had a very busy season and have worked very hard in their own time and to some extent at their own expence.
Our thanks should go out to Paula who leads the team.
Richard who has had a lot of sleepless nights feeding pups.
And to the other medics who have been out picking up sick or injured pups,
    Kas, Jim, Steve.
    Well done to you all.

Awww! Those pictures were fantasic! I throughly enjoyed looking at them. What big sad eyes they have. And as someone said, they do look as if they know more than we do.
