OK, we have heard all the arguements for and against Tescos coming to Wick, now here is our big chance to see if we think it is good for Caithness.
Please vote, the more the merrier...

Perhaps the MSP Eleanor Scott should have checked your results before speaking on behalf of the people of Caithness. I doubt if she even asked anyone before telling the press that no one in Caithness would want a Tesco Store
yeah 46 people is a lot!Originally Posted by captain chaos

in def all for it, how could you not be, cheaper fuel, cheaper food, more variety, electrical products too and the list goes on.
Having worked for Tesco in the past I can also vouch for the fact that they are a good employer, the whole package is built around training and multi tasking, the more things you can do the higher you get paid and there is also an opportunity to get shares.
Guys! oh Guys? The end of the road to our socio-economic dominance I see in the offing, we were never ever good at multi-tasking!!Originally Posted by changilass

I am surprised at the one percent vote - why on earth would some one who doesn't live in caithness be against Tescos coming to caithness?
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
I've asked this before but I don't think I got an answer. Does anyone know for sure the size of the Tesco store that is planned for wick. People are talking as if it's going to be one of the big stores like the one in Inverness. Are you sure it's not going to be one of these Tesco Extra stores?
Maybe it is Lorraine Mann.I am surprised at the one percent vote - why on earth would some one who doesn't live in caithness be against Tescos coming to caithness?
'Cause if my eyes don't deceive me,
There's something going wrong around here
There's at least one bug in the code for doing polls on here. The current state of the vote is:
3/110 is just under 3%, not 2%;Code:Do you welcome Tescos in Caithness? I live in Caithness and I am for Tescos in Caithness 86% [ 95 ] I live in Caithness and I am against Tescos in Caithness 2% [ 3 ] I don't live in Caithness, I am for Tescos in Caithness 9% [ 10 ] I don't live in Caithness, I am against Tescos in Caithness 1% [ 2 ] Total Votes : 110
2/110 is just under 2%, not 1%.
I would guess that someone rounded down instead of rounding to the nearest integer.
Unsurprisingly, the bug has been pointed out previously.
Personally, I'm against the expansion of Tesco, be that expansion into Wick or Warwick... but then we've been through this before.Originally Posted by katarina

Has anyone read this week's Groat re Tesco and the long moaning letter in the letter's page? I have heard the same arguements over and over again. Wick traders said the same about the Continental market but they were wrong.
I am sure local traders think that we owe them a living. If they sell quality produce then they have nothing to fear. I have seen quality produce in local shops but there is a lot of rubbish as well.

That's because (from a food pov) the 'rubbish' is cheaper for them to buy (important if they are competing with the buying power of a supermarket) and has a longer shelf-life (important if they don't have the turnaround of stock that a supermarket would have). It's also because we are more interested in the immediacy of a bargain than the long-term importance of the global food-chain... as many of the arguments in favour of Tesco clearly demonstrate.Originally Posted by Rheghead
I've just read the front page of the groat and can't believe it! Quote; Tesco opening could hit thurso the same way as lidls opening hit Wick; unquote. Alan McIvor goes on to say how depressed the centre of Wick has become and blames Lidl's. What a load of crapp! Waht are the shops that have closed and their reasons? Aliance and Leister building society???? McKay's butchers, (the man retired but his business was good) Hob nobs -(Shut in Thurso too) McKenzie's funriture store (moved location - premises is now a blythwood shop) Dominos nightclub (burnt to the ground) None of the above sold groceries or cheap electrical equipement. I would chalange Mr McIvor to get his facts right before he makes such statements!Originally Posted by Rheghead

So if the butcher trade is so good why did nobody buy the business? Why can't Polson sell his?
BTW. Walk down Dingwall high street and speek to some people, then make your mindy up. I did.
I'm absolutely convinced that competition amongst the bigger supermarkets in a given area has the effect of making the "everyday essentials" more affordable. The effect is to make more money available for the average person to buy luxuries (and for many people good quality, local food falls into that bracket) and so the local specialists in all areas of retail tend to thrive.
If you're a specialist retailer who isn't selling good quality, then to be totally honest you're not a true specialist and your business will suffer.
We should also consider how many people currently go to Inverness once a fortnight/month and spend £2-300, none of that money will make it's way back into the Caithness economy; at least with a Tesco in Wick the salaries they pay will be spent locally; yet another way in which other businesses are boosted.
