Position: New Wave Foods: Survey Assistant
Job Type: Temporary/Full-time
Location: Alness / Caithness (required to travel around Scotland)
Salary: 16,000 - 18,000 Pro-rata (depending on experience)

A temporary vacancy has become available for a Survey Assistant to join New Wave Foods Ltd, a leading processor of sustainably sourced edible organic seaweed based in the Scottish Highlands.

The position will involve carrying out marine ecological surveys of seaweed at various locations around Scotland, including survey planning and reporting. The position may be suited to someone looking for experience in marine ecology, environmental science or food production.
The position will commence early June 2018 for a period of three months with the potential of a further two months extension depending on the needs of the business.

The chosen candidate will receive informal training in areas that will help them with the role if required (e.g. the identification of seaweed species, application of GIS software).

Position is particularly well suited to someone of a scientific background that enjoys fieldwork or any budding marine biologists or environmental scientists.

Key Tasks:

  • Work is of a manual nature and outdoor activities such as working on rocky shores in all weathers to carry out surveys will be frequent.
  • Assisting the New Wave survey team on fieldwork campaigns
  • Planning survey itineraries such as transport, survey timings and accommodation
  • Seaweed identification and analysis in the intertidal zone
  • Survey reporting

Key attributes of the candidate:
Essential

  • Flexible approach with regards to working away from home for several days at a time and outside of normal working hours in order to follow the tide.
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about the marine environment
  • A scientific approach, with a considered, analytic and professional attitude
  • IT skills, proficient with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to organise and manage multiple tasks with a positive approach and focus on delivery
  • An effective communicator and team player with ability to build and maintain positive, working relationships
  • Practical hands on approach; and capable of working both on own initiative and proactively as part of a team

Desirable

  • Marine biology, environmental science, food science background
  • Passion and knowledge of seaweed
  • Access to own vehicle is useful (travel and subsistence costs reimbursed)
