Any room for a southerner up there?

Am currently living in sunny Barnsley. O/H has applied for a job in Wick.
Now, we have been seeking 'the good life', a bit of fresh air and countryside for a long time, but am a bit worried that Wick might be a bit extreme. Also, i keep looking on websites that show really cheap houses that have lots of land attached. This could be a good thing, or an indication that you really have to be barking to want to live there. Could anyone help me out with the pros and cons of life up north and answer a lot of silly questions for me?

Oh how embarrassing. I'm getting this place mixed up with another multi-forum place, which does have a chit chat forum. I'm not addicted, I... um... think.
