Default Gas boiler service by Wick company sees bills balloon

Our local service company could not do the yearly service on our gas boiler this year due to a loss of an engineer . So to keep things local and contacted a a Wick company who duly turned up and serviced the said contraption . Well that's been a bad move as our consumption as go up by 32% (and before we have the friendly few stating that we have turned up this and that ,well don't bother as its set on the same programme.) Contacted the company and got a strangest answer to the question ' that's funny we've had a few customers saying that same thing lately, must be the type of gas you are getting' . Thats an answer straight fout of the "Still Game " book of excuses . Spoke to our neighbour and they said that they had smelt a gassy smell when the boiler was on, but thought it was just the flue. I'll just have to get the old company back to get things checked out , to be on the safe side.

Sick about the 12% added to my bill to pay for wind turbines . MERRY XMAS

Similar thing happened to us about this time last year. Could not be certain the smell was gas as there were lots of flowers and lilies about at the time due to my dad just having passed away. There was indeed a gas leak, upstairs cat got the blame of the smell when tenants returned from holiday, next door could smell it but didn`t report it as it wasn`t their gas! Long story short we were evacuated when Transco were alerted, problem found, pipework repaired and new meter put in all in the same day. When the original repair was investigated by gas safe the technician was asked where our meter was and said it was outside....but it isn`t and he had never been near it to switch gas off to do repair, or pressure test meter before he left. Everything working OK now and have smart meter now so any extra gas flowing out the pipe would be noticed on the graph on that.

Slightest suggestion of a sniff of gas, take no chance and report to Transco.

But isn't poor workmanship the norm for Caithness?
A 1991 Gallup survey indicated that 49 percent of Americans didn't know that white bread is made from wheat.

Have to wonder so many tradesmen doing work up this area are not from Caithness. I saw a joiners' van from Inverness the other day in town, a painter & decorator parked next to a plumbers van, both from Elgin. Surely local tradesmen aren't that bad or expensive that it's cheaper to get a painter & plumber out from Elgin to do the work?

Or perhaps better than Caithness trades people?
