    A CAITHNESS councillor believes part of community funds from wind farms should be used to create a common good fund to help pump- prime Caithness-wide public projects and under-pressure third sector organisations. The call comes from new SNP councillor ,Raymond |Bremner, who is unhappy that large reserves of unspent funds are building up, as they are largely earmarked to support projects in small rural communities.


    THE Thurso site for the annual visit of the sideshows is unfit for purpose, according to a local businessman. Stephen Bremner, who runs Ashley Ann Ltd and lives in Millbank Road, says the venue, in front of the old mill in the Mall, is unsuitable. There have been complaints in the past about the site.

    AN ousted senior Highland councillor clocked up the most expenses last year, claiming almost £14,000. Bill Fernie, who represented
    Wick until he lost his seat last month, was re-paid £13,027.55, between last April and the elections on top of his inflated salary as budget leader and chairman of the resources committee.

    THURSO still has the strongest man in Scotland as athlete Ryan Macintosh powered his way to defend his national title. The 29-year-old muscled his way to retaining Scotland's Natural Strongest Man after beating off challengers in the under-105 kg division at the competition in Huntly.

    AMBITIOUS plans have been revealed to build the first new prison in Scotland for more than 100 years on the outskirts of Inverness. Colliers International has applied for planning permission in principle to replace Porterfield Prison with HMP Highland. The plan is to replace the current prison, located in the city centre with a fit-for-purpose jail.


    ALMOST 85 jobs were created or retained in Caithness and Sutherland in the past year as a result of investment by Highlands and Islands Enterprise. That emerged this week in an announcement by the agency for the year 2016/17.
