Careless driver could have caused "serious injury...or worse" - sheriff

A SHERIFF told a careless young driver that his actions could have caused serious injury - or worse.
Sheriff Andrew Berry added: "This county seems to be awash with it."
Craig Mackay left the scene after he pulled out to overtake a car making a right-hand turn at a junction and collided with it.
The 20-year-old was fined £600 and banned from driving for six months after he admitted careless driving and failing to stop and report the accident.
Outlining the circumstances at Wick Sheriff Court, fiscal Robert Weir said that the hotel worker was behind two vehicles at the Thurdistoff-Greenland junction of the A836, on October 24.
The accused pulled out, overtook the vehicle in front of him and collided the leading car which was indicating a righthand turn, causing damage to wind and a door..
Solicitor Sylvia MacLennan said that Mackay, of Shellbay, John O' Groats, had not noticed the turn-right signal.
She added: "It was the first time he had been involved in an accident and he was not at all sure what he should do. He drove home, with the intention of contacting the police but they arrived seconds after he got out of his car."
Sheriff Berry told Mackay: "There were two vehicles in front of you, but regardless of that, you thought it was appropriate to overtake them while one of them was indicating a right-hand turn. The occupants of that car must have got the fright of their lives."
The sheriff added that that Mackay, who was disqualified previously for speeding, that leaving the scene of an accident was "a serious matter" and added: "It seems you have a long way to go in terms of careful driving and complying with all the road traffic rules."
