    THE number of patient transfers from Caithness General Hospital has "reached crisis point", according to a local health campaigner. Nicola Sinclair spoke out yesterday, after it was revealed that the movements south in 2016/17 are expected to have risen by more than half the total of five years ago.


    CAITHNESS arts and heritage groups have welcomed the launch of a new business partnership fund with £300,000 available in its first year. The Culture and Business Fund Scotland promotes collaboration between businesses and the arts and heritage sectors.


    THOSE campaigning against the downgrading of health services in Caithness, are urging anyone who has received treatment at hospitals in the county, to make their voices heard at a mass protest. Caithness Health Action team is organising a demonstration at Bignold Park in Wick, later this month to show members' concern at the loss of local health services in recent years.


    SADIE Farmer lost her brave three-year battle with cancer in September. But thanks to the help and assistance from a palliative care organisation she was allowed to see out her final days in her own home in Wick.


    THE North Coast 500 can be the catalyst to improving infrastructure and facilities in Caithness. NC500 managing director Tom Campbell said authorities should take notice about the increase in visitors to the north Highlands since it was launched two years ago.


    A THURSO business is in the running for a top accolade after being shortlisted in the Scottish Baker of the Year award. Reids of Caithness were nominated in three different categories but will have to wait until next month to find out if they are successful.

    A RESEARCH conference centring on the peatlands of Caithness and Sutherland, attracted more than 60 experts to Thurso. The fourth Flow Country Research Conference this year, entitled Thinking Big, was hosted, recently, by the Environmental Research Institute at Thurso cinema and North Highland College's ETEC building.


    THE Highland League season may be over in two weeks but Wick Academy manager Gordon Connelly is demanding his players don't take it easy in their remaining four games so they end their campaign on a high. After last weekend's desperately poor 1-1 draw at home to Rothes, the Scorries tomorrow head to play Turriff United who will be looking for a victory that would allow them to leapfrog Academy into seventh place.
