    FOUR out of five women in Caithness gave birth outside the county last year, due to tight restrictions imposed on the local maternity service. Out of a total of 225, just 39 had their deliveries at the Henderson unit at Caithness General Hospital in Wick. The others were all referred to give birth at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

    THE prospects look good for salmon fishing on the River Thurso this season, according to the new superintendent Tim Hawes. He made the prediction after the annual opening ceremony took place at the river, in very wintry and blustery conditions on Wednesday morning.

    NHS Highland is to push through plans to turn the maternity unit at Caithness General Hospital into a midwife-led unit, two months earlier than planned. The bringing forward of the move to Monday January 30, has further incensed local health campaigners who accused the health authority of "rushing through" the change to the detriment of local mothers-to-be.

    A WIND farm could be built on the same location being considered for a world heritage site. Scottish Natural Heritage is advanced in an application to have part of Limekilns Estate , Reay, accredited as an area of special cultural or physical significance approved by the Unesco world heritage centre.

    THURSO Leisure Centre has been hailed as among the best facilities of its kind in the Highlands with its new pool due to open on Monday, after a nine-month makeover. The £2.7 million revamp has also refurbished the gym and other leisure facilities at the centre which celebrates it 50th anniversary in May.

    COMPLAINTS have been received of motorists driving into Wick cemetery that has resulted in damage being caused to paths and graves. Wick councillor Neil Macdonald said he has been contacted by concerned people regarding the amount of cars that have been seen driving into the cemetery on South Road.

    SCOTLAND'S top female motor racer used the car, which earned her so much success during last season, to raise money for a charity which is close to her family's heart. Ashleigh Morris painted the top of her BMW racing car in a chequered flag design and sold black and white squares off, as luck squares, raising £750 for Marie Curie Fundraising Group.

    THE project behind the MeyGen project off the Caithness coast has set up a new division called Atlantis Energy as part of its diversification strategy. It will initially focus on governments investment banks and private developers in the Uk and Europe although it will have a global remit.
