Accused denies fire-raising at Ackergill Tower

AN Edinburgh man has been accused of fire-raising at the luxury Ackergill Tower.

Brendon McNamara pleaded not guilty at Wick Sheriff Court today and will stand trial in the summer.

The indictment alleges that the 36-year-old did, while acting with another, wilfully set fire to a painting, a carpet and papers in a cellar at the 16th century castle near Wick, whereby the flames took hold and caused extensive damage.

McNamara, of Bailie Terrace, Edinburgh, will return to the court for his trial before a jury, on June 5.

Ackergill Tower has, over the years, played host to some national celebrities including Phillip Schofield who married his girlfriend, Stephanie Lowe, there in 1993.
