Driver was more than three times the legal limit

A THURSO man decided to drive home after a night out in the town.
However, when John Sutherland, 28 was stopped by police in the town's Cowie Lane, on December 10, last year, he failed a breath test.
A further test at the police station produced a reading of 77 mgs, more than three times the legal limit of 22 mgs.
The sheriff court at Wick was told, yesterday that Sutherland had originally intended to take a taxi but "stupidly" decided to pick up his own car after encountering a queue at the taxi rank.
Sutherland, of 34 Castlegreen Road, Thurso, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and having no insurance. He was fined 400 and was disqualified from driving for a year on the former offence.
Sheriff Andrew Berry admonished him on the insurance charge.
