Driver was more than three times the legal limit

A THURSO man decided to drive home after a night out in the town.
However, when John Sutherland, 28 was stopped by police in the town's Cowie Lane, on December 10, last year, he failed a breath test.
A further test at the police station produced a reading of 77 mgs, more than three times the legal limit of 22 mgs.
The sheriff court at Wick was told, yesterday that Sutherland had originally intended to take a taxi but "stupidly" decided to pick up his own car after encountering a queue at the taxi rank.
Sutherland, of 34 Castlegreen Road, Thurso, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and having no insurance. He was fined £400 and was disqualified from driving for a year on the former offence.
Sheriff Andrew Berry admonished him on the insurance charge.
