Caithness Courier headlines for January 4, 2017

A WOMAN has paid tribute to her elderly father who is thought to have perished in a fierce blaze that engulfed his house in Caithness before the new year. Neighbours believe that Frederick Johnson Mehlert was inside the stone crofthouse at Scarfskerry when the early evening fire broke out last Wednesday. The extreme heat and danger from the roof caving in, ruled out a rescue attempt by fire fighting crews from Thurso and John O' Groats.

HOGMANAY went down a storm in Thurso with nearly 2000 people turning out to mark the arrival of 2017. Saying goodbye to 2016 in spectacular style, Wick partied into the first wee hours of 2017 as revellers celebrated New Year.

A WICK scientist has been honoured for helping promote science to thousands of schoolchildren in the far north over the past 15 years. Professor Iain Baikie becomes a Member of the British Empire (MBE).

PLANS have been approved to transform a former special needs care home in Latheron into a guesthouse with a cafe and craft shop. Forse of Nature has announced it is aiming to open at the former Forse House Care Home, by Easter, after Highland Council approved planning permission for a change of use of the site.

THE new-style regime to cover Caithness General involves four consultant physicians based at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness in a one-in-four rotation to Wick, 52 weeks of the year. One of them, Grant Franklin said: "Caithness may be over 100 miles away from our base but we are NHS Highland consultants and our duty of care is to everyone in HIghland."

AHSLEIGH MORRIS has taken on the mantle of the queen of Scottish motor racing after being named the top female driver in the country. The Reay racer picked up the Lady Driver of the Year at the Scottish Motor Racing Club awards in Edinburgh.
