MORE than 100 people could lose their jobs in the latest swingeing cuts planned by Highland Council. The cost-cutting measures will see at least 127 full-time jobs axed along with vital front-line services in social services and schools, according to leaked documents.

A WEST Yorkshire man is appealing for locals to get involved in a long-distance fundraising relay which aims to help keep a young mum with incurable cancer, alive, a little bit longer. Sally Major's family and friends are trying to raise £100,000, to fund immuno-therapy treatment for her at a specialist clinic in Germany.

PARENTS of Noss Primary school are becoming increasingly concerned about their children's safety after traffic-calming measures, due to have been implemented when the primary opened in April, remain outstanding. Some of the signs, to flag up a cut in the speed limit from 30 to 20mph on streets near the school, remain covered up.

A CAITHNESS trade union representative has criticised a plan to give control of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to a new national body. John Deighan, a Dounreay union representative, feels the proposal from the Scottish Governbment will undermine the role of the agency.

A PLAN to develop the inner basin at Gills harbour would benefit the tidal energy project in the Pentland Firth. The chairman of the community -owned Gills Harbour Ltd, Bill Mowat, hopes that proposal will be explored at a meeting later this month.

WICK Sea Cadets celebrated their 10th anniversary after being awarded a pennant from the Sea Cadet Association for their outstanding work over the last 12 months. The presentation was made to 11 of the cadets on Tuesday on Tuesday night at its weekly session at Wick Scout Hall.

THE open champion at Aberdeen and Northen Marts Christmas Show and sale at Quoybrae on Tuesday was a 625kg Limousin heifrer from JM Sutherland, Borrowston Mains by Thurso. The heifer sold for £2,800 to Murray Lamont, Mackays Hotel Wick.
