Smell of alcohol was "overwhelming" Wick sheriff told

EMERGENCY services, called to an accident on a remote north road, found an upturned car and the driver lying nearby.
Police got a smell of alcohol from Darren Kay, 48, and he was subsequently charged with driving while unfit through drink.
Kay, of 2 Aikerness Cottages, Westerseat, near Wick, pleaded guilty at the town's sheriff court, yesterday. He was fined £375 and banned from driving for a year.
The court was told that the alarm was raised by a driver heading home on the single track Lybster-Achavanich road in the early hours of October 11 last year.
Fiscal depute Fraser Matheson said that Kay was able to speak to the police who got "an overpowering" smell of drink from him and also observed his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed. A doctor subsequently examined Kay and found him to be "plainly ineibriated".
The accused was treated for his injuries at Caithness General Hospital and later, at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Kay had lost control of his Ford Kia while trying to avoid "some wildlife" that appeared in his path and had consumed further drink for post accident medicinal purposes.
She added that Kay, had had the prospect of a labouring job but it was doubtful that it would still be available to him without a licence.
