I heard my first cuckoo today, it was quite close to the house as well.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

The wife and I were up above New Luce last Thursday it must have been around 8.30pm. I saw what I thought was a Merlin as it flew in front of the car. Stopped and got the binocs out only to find it was a Cuckoo, only the second one I’ve ever seen.
First one was then joined by a second! I couldn’t tell whether it was male/female or male/male but one of the pair started a courtship dance. I don’t know if it was to impress or deter the other but every time it cuckooed its tail shot up like a fan. Fantastic sight.

    The cuckoo comes in April,
    Sings his song in May,
In June he changes his tune,
    In July he flies away.

Don't know if any one else learnt this as a child, thought I heard 1 briefly a couple of weeks back early morning but nothing since.

I'm fairly slow but I only heard him on Saturday (2 June) for the first time this year. Lizz, what does he change his tune to in June? He was still cuckooing on Saturday.
