    THE Scottish government is being slammed for allowing a wind farm developer not to replant trees which were cut down to make way for a 15 turbine development in central Caithness. Scottish Power Renewables had applied to delete a condition of its planning consent which obliged it to replace hundreds of hectares of woodland which will be cut down to make way for the 34.5 megawatt development at Halsary Forest on the Causewaymire.

    REIDS of Caithness rose to the occasion as the Thurso firm was crowned best wholesale baker in Scotland. The company, which was established 50 years ago, beat off competition from top bakers from across the country to land the title at the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards.

    A NEW time frame has been drawn up for the levelling of the experimental reactors which operated at Dounreay. It follows the publication by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority of the site's new business plan for 2016-19.

    THE Caithness Music Festival, in its 62nd year, is gearing up for a fine display of talent from the young and old of the county. The festival's programme has been released, revealing a high number of entries in the vocal and instrumental piping, speech and drama and Caithness dialect categories.

    THE first refugee families being resettled in the Highlands, are expected to arrive in Alness shortly. Highland Council has confirmed that four families will be moving to their new homes in the Easter Ross town "within the next few weeks".

    TWO Orcadians will get on their bikes next month and cycle around both sides of the Pentland Firth to raise money for the Fishermen's Milssion, in memory of a Thurso fisherman and his crewmates who died when their crab boat sank off the Western Isles.

    BUS fares across Caithness and the rest of Stagecoach North Scotland's patch have been frozen. The move comes after the bus operator announced it had invested £8.3 million in the past 12 months in its Highland fleet.

    PLANS to operate two floating wind turbines off Dounreay have beenb boosted by an injection of £2.1 million into the proposed venture. Swedish company Hexicon has received the investment through issuing shares which will help bankroll the development of its offshore wind platform.
