Default Air Passenger Duty to be cut

I see that there is a consultation out by the Scottish Government to halve the duty? What's that going to do; simply increase more flights - Easyjet has already stated today they will operate more flights from Scottish airports.. hmm won't do much to cut CO2 emissions will it - thought Scotland prided itself on it's Green credentials?

It will save on emmisions generated getting down to England to catch your flight in the first place.

True, but for the first time ever tried flying from Wick on Fly(May)Be down to Edinburgh for onward flight, very expensive but certainly worth it - just seems a bit odd; 'A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research shows the annual contribution to the UK economy of the leisure aviation industry is £14.1bn.' as less going to the coffers in Scotland?

Yes, because if you are flying direct from Scotland then you don't need to mke that journey at all...

Excuse typo above ^^^ , tried to fix it but the replacement "a" kept appearing in the line above, will this ever be fixed?

It's just another populist policy which raises headlines but actually offers little benefit or change.

A £7 reduction in a domestic flight isn't going to make me more likely to take it. If I need to fly, I'll fly.

It's the same for premium international flights. If someone is willing to pay £2000+ for a business class flight to America, I doubt a £73 reduction will make any difference to their decision.

In reality, I think what will happen is that any reduction in duty will coincide with the airlines raising prices. This is exactly what happened when the air discount scheme started. Eastern Airways cheapest price to Aberdeen was approx £100. ADS 40% discount came in and prices rose to £140. The airline knew people were willing to be £100 out of pocket for the flight, so the 'discount' basically bypassed the public and made the airline richer.

A nonsense policy that costs the public purse whilst making the rich richer. The tories would be proud.

    Pigs might fly.
