    A 26-year-old man was killed when the car in which he was travelling was involved in ahead-on smash with a 4 x 4 in west Caithness, early on Wednesday evening. The victim, understood to be a foreign national, was declared dead at the scene of the smash near a sweeping s-bend close to Forss on the A836 Thurso to Dounreay road.


    MILES of rural roads are falling apart at a rapid pace as one councillors claims Caithness roads are not fit to take the high number of lorries travelling to major local construction projects. Landward Highland councillor Matthew Reiss said it is an uncomfortable truth that roads in Caithness are not designed to handle heavy goods vehicles and added some rural roads in the area require major engineering work before the problem becomes worse.


    A CAITHNESS minister is accusing Highland Council of trying to make savings “on the back of bereaved families” with its move to ramp up the cost of burials. The Rev. John Nugent, the Church of Scotland minister at Wick St Fergus, is urging the local authority to rethink the proposal which is due to firm up next week as part of a £40 million package of cuts.

    VOLUNTEERS are needed“blooming” quick to save floral displays in Wick in the face of swingeing council cuts. The Wick flower baskets group said attracting new members was the only way the town's flower displays would continue.


    A NEW group has been formed on the east coast of Caithness to benefit residents as well as enhance the well being and physical health across all generations. Latheronwheel and Latheron Improvements Group now has 33 members the area who have shown a great interest in helping to regenerate and develop a range of projects.


    THURSO swimming pool will close at the beginning of March as the refurbishment progresses to the next stage. Builders have already started work on the new dance studio and fitness suite and now the upgrade to the pool, expected to take a few months is to start.


    A CAITHNESS woman,passionate about supporting young women, has been nominated for Young Person's Champion of the Year at the Nation Youth Work Awards 2016. Elspeth Husband who lives in Thurso is a Girl-guiding leader and has been involved in the organisation for more than 20 years.
