That is a great idea which will help both dogs and the elderly who might not otherwise be able to home a dog and so lose out on wonderful companionship.
I just stumbled across this amazing little charity and wanted to share their details, in case they were of use to anyone. The charity is called Give A Dog A Bone... and an animal a home. Their blurb says:-
We CARE about the rising number of animals in shelters and about loneliness in old age, so we had an idea… We want to bring animals and the elderly together by providing two services:
We will support the local elderly population – who are struggling to afford to feed their pets – by providing help with their monthly pet food costs. Our hope is that this will prevent this group from handing their beloved pets into over-crowded shelters.
We will support the local elderly population – who are unable to afford a pet – to benefit from the love of an animal. If they choose to re-home an animal from a shelter, we can pay for all associated re-homing fees, whilst providing on-going monthly support with pet food costs.
What a fantastic idea. They are a Scottish registered charity and can be contacted via their website at http://www.giveadogabone.net.

"Until one has loved an animal part of their soul remains unawakened"
Bump please
Brilliant idea but as a carer I know several elderly people who have had to hand there dogs into rescues because they are no longer able to walk them.
