I run these programs in order
Ccleaner (Free Version) This will clean up all your temporary files etc, has a registry optimizer built in but tampering with registry can cause issues and TBH it doesn't make a night and day performance gain. I will only ever go into the registry to clear out a niggling virus which over the years has only been the once.

MalwareBytes (Free Version) For first time installation I will do a complete scan after getting latest updates. Will take a while to scan dependent on speed of your system.

And MSE (Microsoft security essentials) as my anti-virus program, again its free and can take a while to do a complete scan dependent on your system

Also check your startup programs too, if you have installed many programs over the years a lot of them are set to run at startup which means longer boot-up times etc. You can disable these from running automatically though.
There is loads of software out there and a lot of its just crap, some of them are malware themselves making you think you have a serious issue prompting you to pass over payment to get rid of the fake nastys it finds.
For majority of the public the above 3 programs is all you ever need.....no need to subscribe to anything, all free and do a good job. Good internet browsing is what it comes down to, dont click dodgy links in emails or on social media etc and you cannot go wrong then.
