Sheriff warns of the danger of chancing an overtaking manoeuvre

A SHERIFF expressed concern about a driver who overtook a line of traffic, including a bus, when it wasn't safe to do so.
The driver, David Bailey, 48, was fined £325 by Sheriff Andrew Berry, at Wick, today. after admitting a reduced charge of careless driving. He also incurred three penalty points.
The court heard that an oncoming vehicle was forced to slow down to allow Bailey to complete his manoeuvre on a straight stretch of the A9 at Georgemas,, in Caithness, on December 9, last year.
Fiscal David Barclay described the accused's assessment of the required space involved, as “over-optimistic”.
Sheriff Berry told Bailey of 19 Cadgwith Gardens, Bilston, West Midlands, who was bound for a course at Dounreay, at the time: “I am sure you now realise that the roads in this part of the world are most often not suited for overtaking, especially when the consequences can be very, very serious.”
