Default Unpaid work for 'bite' assault

Nightclub steward required tetanus injection after 'nasty' attack

A DRUNKEN Thurso man, who bit a local nightclub steward attempting to eject him, has been banned from the premises for two years.

Paul Kennedy, 31, was also ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid community work, by Sheriff Andrew Berry who described the incident as "nasty".

Kennedy was said to have been "totally inebriated" when he assaulted door steward John Murray. The accused pleaded guilty and also admitted resisting the police, and a record.

The incident, at Skinandi's nightspot occurred about 1.30am on February 22 after Kennedy reacted badly to being asked to leave the premises, Wick Sheriff Court was told, today.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the situation developed into "something of a fracas" during which Mr Murray was bitten on his arm and while being detained, outside, by police officers, the accused struggled with them and resisted arrest.

Mr Barclay said that the bite broke Mr Murray's skin and he required to receive a precautionary tetanus injection and follow-up tests.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that Kennedy, of 3 Whitelfield House, Thurso, was "totally inebriated " and had no recollection of the incident.. The assault had occured when Mr Murray had put his arm across the accused's chest while restraining him.

Sheriff Berry said it must have been an unpleasant experiences for Mr Murray who consequently would not have been able to consider blood donation for a substantial period.

The sheriff told Kennedy: "This would have caused him and those close to him, ongoing concern. Those carrying out a service contributing to public order, are entitled to be treated with respect and this offence must not be repeated."
