JOHN O' GROAT JOURNAL HEADLINES FOR JUNE 12, 2015

PEOPLE would have to put up with "a second-rate service" if no out-of-hours surgery is undertaken at Caithness General Hospital, a public meeting has been told. The claim, which is strongly denied by NHS Highland, was made at a public meeting in the Pentland Hotel in Thurso, on Wednesday night. Around 40 people turned up, to hear the health authority's plans for the Wick hospital and other medical services following a lengthy review.

A DISABLED pensioner's fight to stop Highland Council demolishing his sheds, has been taken up by far north MP, Paul Monaghan. He has written to the local authority asking why the sheds, which belong to 71-year-old Donald Connor at Fountain Square in Haster, are illegal and why they need to be demolished.

A CAITHNESS patient, who has to travel to hospital in Inverness on a weekly basis, has described a decision to cut travel expenses as "insane". "I have to travel from Thrumster to New Craigs Hospital in Inverness on a weekly basis for treatment. This is a round trip of 208 miles, a considerable journey both for me and my car".

A DODO is the latest to take up the challenge of completing the well-trodden path between Land's End and John O' Groats. The bird is as dead as the one in John Cleese's memorable Monty Python sketch, but the prized museum exhibit is sure to generate more than a flutter of interest in the Caithness village.

A NEW service is being launched at Caithness General Hospital next week for patients who suffer the trauma of a miscarriage or the death of a baby before, during or after birth. A group of volunteers has donated an "angel baby" cuddle cot which will be based in the hospital's top-floor, during, or after birth.

TWO teams from Caithness will be competing in a car race near Aberdeen this weekend. But the teams from Castletown and Watten will be racing electric-powered cars they built themselves. The event at the Grampian Transport Museum track at Alford, is run by the Greenpower Education Trust. It challenges teams, aged between nine and 25 to build and race their own, electric-powered race cars.
