    Smile Old fashioned beastie beer..

    Has anyone heard of beastie beer in Caithness,if so what were the beasties?

    Thank you Maggie but the beastie beer we had as young children we did not boil or cook. It was a kind of yeast fungus that grew in a tall sweetie jar covered with water,sugar & treacle and the liquid was lovely to drink, when one replenished the liquid you could see the gas bubbles rising up.

    The bubbles were likely the "beasties" then!
    Reminds me of good old "sugarolly water" made with hard liquorice and water in a lemonade bottle. No good unless it was left in a wardrobe or under the bed for a couple of days!!

    Yours sounds like a variation on the ginger beer plant.
