    MANAGEMENT at Dounreay yesterday refused to comment on claims that the site is in turmoil and that morale among staff is at rock bottom. According to a source inside th eplant, some long-serving smployees "can't remember it being so bad" The workforce is concerned about th way the Caithness plant is being run, while trade unions have submitted a letter of little or no confidence in management and have been involved in talks to try and resolve the issues.

    AN anti-wind farm campaigner is demanding answers from Highland Council, claiming it is ignoring its own recommendations regarding exclusion \ones when it comes to installing turbines close to schools. brenda Herrick wants the authority to give her assurances about its policy of locating turbines a safe distance from primaryschools after one recently fell into part of a factory in Wick.

    THE opening of the new Noss primary school in Wick, could be delayed for a number of weeks and there are fears it may not open until the end of 2015. Ewan Pearson, chairman of the Hillhead parent council, hit out, after hearing the schedule has been affected after damage caused by last month's storms.

    THURSO Heritage Society created its own little bit of history this week with the launch of an online website which cost almost £20,000. The event, held in the town's Royal British Legion premises on Wednesday evening, attracted around 80 people and was regarded as "a special night" for the society.

    THE tourist trade in the far north could rake in millions of pounds from being part of a major initiative aimed at encouraging visitors to explore the whole of the Highlands. North Coast 500 is due to be launched as a new touring route in the style of the American route 66 to bring out the best of the north Highlands in a journey along the region's three coastlines.

    A VOLUNTEER group which helps keep Wick "blooming lovely" is desperate to find new members as Caithness faces severe cutbacks to its gardening services. For the last 16 years, Wick Flower and Hanging Basketts Committee has worked tirelessly to create floral displays to add a splash of colour to the towns. But the group is now appealing for more volunteers - especially in light of planned Highland Council cutbacks.

    FORMER employees of a tidal power developer have become the first to benefit from a new multi-million pound fund which aims to develop new technology in the renewing energy sector. Wave Energy Scotland, which will receive a total of £14.3 million over the next 13 months, has awarded its first contract to a group of 12 Pelamis Wave Power Ltd employees.
