Default win 98 se back to life

    Hi all,
Deleted win98 se on my old computer and reinstalled windows. All my programs went down the swanny and I am in the process of reinstalling them.
But I keep getting missing dll's ,been on google and down loaded them. I did further research and have come up with very conflicting reports as what to do with them. From just insert in windows/system and never down load dll's.

Found a small program on internet called ' slim cleaner plus' any one ever heard of it? It is supposed to fix dll problems. Your comments on both topics would be welcome.

    Regards AK.

what dll's are claiming to be missing?

I would not use anything I downloaded from the net to be honest.

Like all free winddows software it will probably pop up adverts wanting you to pay to upgrade etc.
It will probably run in the so xalled "background" I iagine it will probably slow your windows PC even more.
Look at some Linux versions eg Mint . No dlls needed
Avoid the Gates of Hell. Use Linux.

    Hi both,
dx100uk I see you are a commercial person I am not going to pay any more for this old girl.Northern Computers had a go when my problem was windows freezing up. If you are still interested a look at the msfn forum, under pulteny in the win9x section you will be able follow my posts It would save a lot of typing here. Thought I would give the locals a try;The dll's in question are ms09.dll and icmp.dll scanned both downloads with macafee 2014 total protection ok.

Wizzbang have thought about linux and someone suggested the bear version but that will be for later just before she goes in the recycle bin. I have two hard discs on it a small one 5GB, could I install linux on that or would the two conflict.

    not after business

    here to help

know the early os's very well.

i'll go find that forum/thread tomorrow and see if I can help

I'd put office 97 on first
then see if it cures the issues
both of those are linked to office.

    Hi dx100uk,
I do not know how to post links like others would, but the win 9x section of the msfn forum is not very much used and my posts under pulteny is still on page two .
I did have office 97 when the dll's came up, it was a sticky installation so maybe if I removed it and tried again . The icmp.dll came up when I tried to open the software for my usb wireless adapter.

    Hi Again
I have a lenova and I shank the windows partition then installed Linux mint .On boot up you have a choice windows or linux.

Linux mint can be run directly from a Burnt dvd ( although a bit slower then if it was on the hard drive) This will not effect the operating system already installed and lets you get a feel for linux mint.
a good site to look at and get the download links is distrowatch.com

Linux doesnt suit everyone but I find it is much quicker then windows. Ithasnt crashed no matter how many applications are running and you dont really need to worry about viruses and all the antivirus stuff that always seem to slow windows to my mind.
There is a software repository in one of the Mint menus where 90% of the software is free and well tested and checked before being released.
One other point. updates to linux are frequent and done in the background without having to reboot the machine afterwards.

well thats me off my soapbox now.
good luck with getting your problem sorted.

Hi cesare , very negative comments and no help at all, this is a slow moving project and I am sure with help from more generous people will be interesting and I will learn a lot.
Any sensible comments on what and where to put down loaded dll's would be appreciated .

    Regards AK.

    Hi again dx100uk,
Yes I installed the win 98 drivers that came with the adapter, used to work ok when OP was running properly, also added wi98 drivers for my Sandisk cruser usb memory stick. The computer does not recognize it and appears with a yellow question mark in task manager. As I said earlier office 97 was installed but the dll problem still showed up. My better half says I should use the format and re-install windows, start from scratch, good fun.

Whizzbang did not mention what would happen if I installed LINUX on the other hard disc.

    Regards AK.

I've got to admit I'd wipe it and start again.
it might be a good idea to remove all the partitions first too

    Default Win 98se

    Hi all again,

This project has moved on very slowly but I have installed a lot of the old programs found on long forgotten discs. There are still dll. problems.

I once saw the son of dx100uk work on a Winxp computer where a command line was entered (like msconfig) and the installation disc was used to check the files on the hard disc.

Does any one out there know if such a command is included with Win98se?

    Regards AK.

Ps. The hard disc was reformatted and the OS was reinstalled.
