    Default Fit's in 'e Groat 'e day

John O Groat Journal headlines for August 15, 2014

CAITHNESS brothers, who have a rare genetic condition, are to get life-saving bone marrow transplants. Four-year-old Arran Macleod is due to undergo his operation at the Royal Hospital for Sick children in Glasgow, on September 12. His seven-year-old brother Euan, who has the same condition, will also get a transplant at the same hospital, once Arran has recovered. No date has been set for Euan’s operation although it could be around the middle of October.

CAITHNESS councillors are spending less time travelling south to take part in Highland Council meetings, as the use of video-conferencing facilities in Wick is on the rise. The county’s 10 elected representatives are using technology more, to take part in committee discussions with colleagues in Inverness and spending less on expenses.

THE controversial decision to allow a number of Highland police officers a standing authority to carry firearms, is to be reviewed by two governing bodies. HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland is to assess the current practices relating to the issue and carrying of weapons by armed response vehicles.

DEVELOPERS proposing to build a wind farm near Watten, are to hold a two-day public exhibition to showcase their plans next month. WPD Scotland want to build five turbines on grazing land at Cnoc Morail, West Watten, two kilometres south-west of the village. It is the first application the Edinburgh-based firm – part of the German WPD Group – have proposed to build in Caithness.

FAR north councillors will meet in 10 days time to discuss support for our Fly the Flag for Caithness campaign which aims to give the county its own official flag. If successful, Caithness would become the first mainland county in Scotland to have such a standard.

AFTER trotting off with major titles from one of the top agricultural shows in the north-east, three Caithness horsewomen managed to return home before the worst ravages of the aftermath to hurricane Bertha. Ruth Sutherland and Lisa & Carolyn Coghill competed on Sunday in the horse section of Keith Show whose organisers ended up having to cancel the whole of the scheduled programme, on Monday.

AN adventurer who has swam the distance from John O’ Groats to Land’s End and cycled between the two points, is now running the famous route. Sean Conway left Groats at the weekend and hopes to complete his feat within six weeks.
