The company has just tied up a deal with Premier Oil UK Limited to build the pipeline to support its Catcher Area development, 180 kilometres east of Aberdeen. NEWS that specialist police officers across Scotland have been authorised to carry handguns in a holster while on routine patrol, has been met with anger from one local council representative. Deidre Mackay, Caithness and Sutherland area leader, thinks the situation is “outrageous” and that “routinely-armed police have no place in the Highlands.”

A total of 720 far north families or individuals have received food aid in the last 12 months up by a staggering 25 per cent compared to the previous year, as welfare reforms continue to take their toll on the most vulnerable.

OUR Fly the Flag for Caithness campaign has been getting an encouraging level of support judging by reader feedback and the response it has elicited from further afield. The intention is to gauge whether the idea of the county having its own flag commands enough backing to join forces with Highland Council, in lodging a formal application the Lord Lyon, King of Arms.

THE number of people out of work in Caithness has fallen by nine per cent over the last 12 months according to the latest report analysing the state of the north’s economy. Figures from the Highland and Islands Monthly Economic Report – compiled by Mackay consultants – show between March 2013 and March 2014, the total number of unemployed people of working age in the county decreased from 603 to 546.

WICK High school pupils are to meet with some of the country’s top technology industry professionals in Glasgow, to discuss the school’s success in creating mobile apps. Last year, students achieved national recognition when they won two out of the five national categories in the UK Apps for Good competition.

RETIRED north coast head teacher Jim Johnston is about to achieve one of his greatest ambitions – climbing Africa’s highest peak, the 5895m high Mount Kilimanjaro. The 63-year-old, who had triple heart bypass surgery 18 months ago, is doing the trek in aid of the British Heart Foundation and the Tongue and Farr Sports Association of which he is company secretary. Jim has another reason to support the heart charity, aside from his own brush with ill health. His wife Jenny had to have a pacemaker fitted in November after suddenly developing a slow heart beat.
