Thread: Caithness Community Centre Project.

A social enterprise project on a proposed community centre in Thurso has been ongoing for the last few months. Next week the business plan for the project will be pitched to local businesses that have access to funds to get the project up and running.
No plans have been confirmed for what the facility would consist of however, due to the demand of a public accessible indoor games hall it has been made the main aim of the project. As you can see from the photo below Thurso does not have access to a public games hall where the majority of other towns in the highlands do have this type of facility and much more.
With the new sports course starting at the college next year and with over 50 local clubs struggling to pay for the rising costs of the present facilities the demand for a new indoor facility could not be higher.
The project aims and objectives are realistic knowing that funding will be limited however the more backing there is from the community the more successful the project can be. It would be much appreciated if you have a spare 5 minutes to complete the survey on the what sports and activities you already participate in.

    Many Thanks.

A local group the Thurso Community Trust have been working on this for a few years . Its strange that this group have now turned up out of the blue. The TCT approached Tesco's to take over the Millbank Building (when it was up for sale) which is by far the best site as it flows onto the Millbank Park . Tesco stated that the proposal to hand the building to a Trust (which is a Charity) is not in line with shareholders interests , which was strage as they had offer the Tesco building in Forres to the community for free . The TCT are looking into using the Thurso station building for community use ,they plan to have the rail line pushed back up the track to clear the end of the building by 20ft ,have the open end glassed in and the floor raised. The stores and old toilets(this would be the new ticket office) and the ticket office would become a cafe. The rooms could be used by many groups and the main platform space is multi purpose. This project is in the bracket for funding. This may push Tesco's to tidy up the Mart site and maybe allow some of the ground for parking . So who's running the group ? and tell them to PM .

There is a few groups that have have looked into a community centre in Thurso. The project that I am involved with has been set up by the social enterprise academy. The aim of the project is to get funding for research for a community centre in the Thurso area. If funding is secured then the aims are to work with local groups who are already pursuing in plans of a community centre.

The problem has always been that groups have individually been looking to set up plans rather than a combined effort.
