    Default Fit's in 'e Groat 'e day

John O’ Groat Journal headlines for March 14, 2014

THE Caithness community was treated “with contempt and disdain” by the Ministry of Defence over its handling of the radiation leak at Vulcan. The management of the incident – described as being a cross between “a Brian Rix farce and a Thurso Players pantomime” – resulted in the MoD losing the trust of Dounreay Stakeholder Group which acts as a community watchdog for Vulcan and the next-door civil nuclear plant. Members at their latest quarterly meeting on Wednesday evening, agreed the relationship has to be built up again to ensure “this sort of thing never happens again”.

A WOMAN has described the traumatic time she had last year with an incredible string of events leaving her completely devastated”. Former Halkirk resident , Jane Paige, said 2013 had not been a good year for her, after suffering the loss of her mother, an accident involving her father and a house move which left some of her most treasured items damaged and missing. Ms Paige, now living in France, stayed in Caithness with her mother and father for six years but as her parents got older, they decided the winters were too uncomfortable for them and it was time to move.

THE hugely-controversial move to shut down 23 public counters in the Highlands has been put on ice after councillors yesterday voted 43-31 in favour of a review. Highland Council’s leader claimed his opposition counterpart had climbed “the Mount Everest of Hypocrisy” in another long and stormy clash on the issue. The decision to shut almost two-thirds of the service point network – amid falling demand and plans to improve the authority’s webtsite – sparked a public outcry last month.

THE Ministry of Defence made “a complete and utter hash” of dealing with the radiation incident at Vulcan. So says Derrick Milnes, who is the chairman of the Thurso and Wick Trades Union Council and a member of Dounreay Stakeholder Group. He contrasted the secrecy of the MoD with the openness he claims exists at the next-door Dounreay civil nuclear site.

IT is the end of an era as Thurso Live Music Association has decided to disband next year. The group has brought top classical musicians to the county for over 50 years but its members have now decided it is time to call it a day after failing to attract young blood they feel they need in their committee, to carry on.

THE Caithness International Science Festival is ready and waiting to shower people with fun, magic and wonderful craziness again. The popular event will be launched next Tuesday with an amazing range of activities planned and the organisers are keen for everyone, not just children, to get involved.

WICK is set to benefit from a funding scheme aimed at helping benefit claimants who have been affected by welfare reforms which came into force last year. Pulteneytown People’s Project is one of six bases across the Highlands which will have on hand, a welfare rights expert for the next 12 months, thanks to funding from the Making Advice Work scheme.

THE history of a local harbour has gone digital with photographs artefacts and memories from the community on display. The Brough Archive was initially collected by members of Brough Bay Association who are all volunteers, as part of a project to renovate Brough Harbour in 2011. The group has since continued to update the digital archive and last week launched a new database at Castlehill Heritage Centre, Castletown, where the public can now view it.
