Default Bomb disposal team in action at Wick

Gales gives up more of wartime ship's explosive cargo

A BOMB disposal team has travelled north to deal with two unexploded bombs the latest ammunition to be uncovered on the seabed from the wreck of the Isleford which ran aground in gale on the north side of Wick Bay, in 1942 with the loss of all hands.
The ship was on passage from Rosyth to Scapa Flow when she developed engine trouble and was swept onto rocks.
A shore-based team tried in vain to get a line abroad the stricken vessel and were helpless to save the crew which could only watch helpless as one seaman appeared on a mast only to be swept away with by a wave. The other 13 crew members also perished.
